Overview

Zinc and copper are considered essential trace minerals. Our Zinc 15mg is formulated with copper because it is important to take additional copper when using zinc for longer than a month because zinc may interfere with copper absorption. Copper imbalances may lead to anemia and various other problems.

The zinc in this formula is chelated and easy for the body to absorb because we utilize zinc from zinc arginate, zinc histidinate and zinc glycinate. The copper comes from copper lysinate and copper glycinate.

Our Zinc 15mg is available in 60 and 120 count vegetarian capsules.

Zinc
Zinc is considered an essential trace mineral which participates in more than 300 enzymatic functions in the body. Contributing in all major biochemical pathways and physiological processes, zinc’s roles include maintenance of genetic material as well as cell division. Zinc is primarily stored in muscle, bones, and skin, with high concentrations in the retina of the eye, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and prostate gland in men. Every cell in the body needs zinc; hundreds of body processes rely upon it. Zinc is needed for normal growth and development. It has been shown to help regulate a wide variety of immune system. Studies indicate that Zinc may help to control blood sugar levels. In a small study conducted on children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, zinc was found to have a positive effect on some symptoms. Additional studies show that zinc may be an important component of skin health. Zinc also has antioxidant properties, and is important to proper maintenance of Vitamin E levels in the blood. It also improves the activity of vitamin A. Moreover, it is a constituent of the powerful antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD). The body does not manufacture zinc so it is necessary to obtain through diet or supplementation. One of the first signs of zinc deficiency is a lost of taste and smell, elderly people and vegetarians have a greater risk of deficiency.

Copper
Copper is the third most abundant trace mineral in the body. It is an essential component of many enzymes and at least 15 proteins. It is involved in the production of collagen and elastin, and as such is essential to the structural integrity and elasticity of tissues, bones and organs. Copper is also necessary for the maintenance of healthy nerves and joints. It is necessary for the production of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen throughout the body. Copper also aids in the production of energy by helping the body make adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Finally, it is essential to the production of two important enzymes: superoxide dismutase, a powerful antioxidant, and dopamine beta-hydroxylase which are enzymes that help regulate the metabolism of vitamin C and the synthesis of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Copper can be obtained from a wide variety of foods; however the typical American diet is low in copper. The best dietary sources, oyster and liver, are not eaten frequently; therefore it is necessary for most people to obtain their copper from dietary supplements.
